Grey: about flat (between −1% and +1%). Red: the economy shrank. Blue: it grew. The further a shade is from grey, the bigger the change. Portugal is outlined. Small countries are shown as dots.

What it is

Gross domestic product (GDP) is the value of everything a country produces in a year. Growth is the change compared with the year before, with the effect of rising prices taken out, so it shows whether the economy actually produced more.

Why it matters

Growth makes room for higher wages, profits and tax income. Poorer countries often grow faster because they are catching up; rich countries tend to grow 1% to 3% a year. A fall in GDP over a year usually means a recession.

What moves it

Household spending, company investment, government spending and exports; also harvests, energy prices, wars, pandemics and natural disasters. Figures are often revised later.
