Grey: close to 2%, the rate many central banks aim for. Red: slower, or prices fell. Blue: faster. The further a shade is from grey, the bigger the gap. Portugal is outlined. Small countries are shown as dots.

What it is

Inflation is how much more a typical basket of household shopping (food, rent, energy, transport, services) cost over a whole year than the year before. These are yearly averages from each country's consumer price index, so they move more slowly than the monthly figures in the news.

Why it matters

Inflation decides what wages and savings are really worth. A country where prices rise 2% a year feels very different from one where they rise 30%: people rush to spend, save in foreign currency, and borrowing gets expensive. Many central banks, including the ECB and the US Federal Reserve, aim for about 2% a year.

What moves it

Energy and food prices, wages, how much people and companies want to spend, the exchange rate (imports get dearer when a currency weakens), and how much money the central bank and government put into the economy.
