Grey: close to balance (between −2% and +2%). Red: a deficit. Blue: a surplus. The further a shade is from grey, the bigger the deficit or surplus. Portugal is outlined. Small countries are shown as dots.

What it is

The current account adds up what a country earns from the rest of the world (exports, income from investments abroad, money sent home by people working abroad) and subtracts what it pays out. A surplus means it earns more than it spends abroad; a deficit means the opposite.

Why it matters

A country with a deficit has to borrow from abroad or sell assets to foreigners to pay for it. Small deficits are normal, especially for countries that are investing a lot; large, lasting ones can leave a country exposed if lenders lose confidence. A surplus means the country is lending to the rest of the world.

What moves it

Prices of what a country exports and imports (oil exporters swing with the oil price), how strong its currency is, tourism, and how much its people save compared with what they invest.
