What it is
Rice feeds more than half the world's people, mostly in Asia. Only a small share of it is traded between countries, so the world price can move sharply. This is the export price of a standard quality of Thai white rice.
The units
US dollars per tonne (1,000 kg). '5% broken' is a quality grade: at most 5% of the grains are broken.
What moves the price
Monsoon rains and harvests in Asia, export bans (India, the largest exporter, has used them), stock levels, fertiliser and fuel costs, and exchange rates in exporting countries.
Why it matters for everyday prices
For many families in Asia and Africa, rice is a big share of the food budget, so its world price matters far more there than in Europe.
