Each figure is the average over a whole month, published weeks or months after the month ends. It shows the trend, not the price on any one day, and it is never a live price.
What it is
An index made by the World Bank that combines world prices of crude oil, natural gas and coal, weighted by how much of each the world trades. It shows the direction of energy prices as a whole.
The units
An index, not a price: 2010 = 100. A value of 150 means energy cost on average 50% more than in 2010, in US dollars and before adjusting for inflation.
What moves the price
Mainly crude oil, which has the largest weight, plus natural gas and coal prices in the US, Europe and Asia.
Why it matters for everyday prices
Energy costs feed into nearly every price: transport, heating, electricity, food production and manufacturing.
