What it is
The exchange rate says how many US dollars one euro buys. The ECB publishes a reference rate once a day, around 16:00 Lisbon time; banks and money-transfer apps quote their own rates around it.
Why it matters
It changes the price of holidays, imports and anything priced in dollars, such as oil. For investors, a weaker dollar shrinks the value of US shares when counted in euros, even if the shares themselves did not move.
What moves it
The gap between euro and US interest rates, growth and inflation in both economies, and the general mood in markets.
