Each figure is the average over a whole month, published weeks or months after the month ends. It shows the trend, not the price on any one day, and it is never a live price.
What it is
Natural gas is a fossil fuel used to heat homes, cook, generate electricity and make fertiliser and chemicals. This is the average price US local gas companies pay when gas is delivered to their network (the 'citygate'), before they add their own costs for the final customer.
The units
US dollars per thousand cubic feet. A thousand cubic feet is about 28 cubic metres of gas.
What moves the price
The weather above all (cold winters and hot summers that run air conditioning), how much gas is produced and stored, exports of liquefied gas (LNG) to Europe and Asia, and how much power stations burn instead of coal or renewables.
Why it matters for everyday prices
Gas sets the price of heating and, in many countries, of electricity, because gas power stations often decide the market price. Europe learnt this in 2022, when its gas prices jumped many times over and household energy bills followed. Gas prices differ a lot between regions, because gas is expensive to ship.
This is a US price. European gas (the Dutch TTF benchmark) is priced by a private exchange and can't be shown here.
