This is a weekly survey of filling stations, published a day or two after each Monday's survey. It shows what drivers paid on average that week, not a live price.
What it is
The average price of diesel at US filling stations, from a survey of stations across the country every Monday, taxes included.
The units
US dollars per US gallon. A US gallon is 3.785 litres.
What moves the price
The crude oil price, refining capacity for diesel (which is tighter than for petrol in many years), demand from transport and farming, heating demand in winter (heating oil is almost the same product), and taxes.
Why it matters for everyday prices
Diesel moves goods: lorries, trains, ships and farm machines run on it. When diesel gets dearer, the cost of transporting food and other goods rises, which reaches shop prices with a delay.
