What it is
Cocoa beans are fermented, dried seeds of the cocoa tree, the raw material of chocolate. About 60% of the world's cocoa comes from two West African countries, Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana. This is the average price published by the International Cocoa Organization, an intergovernmental body.
The units
US dollars per kilo of cocoa beans.
What moves the price
West African harvests, weather and tree diseases, the age of the trees, rules and prices set by the governments of the main producers, and demand from chocolate makers.
Why it matters for everyday prices
Cocoa is a large part of the cost of chocolate, so big moves in cocoa show up in chocolate prices and in smaller bars, usually with a delay of six months or more.
