What it is
Maize (called corn in the US) is the world's most produced grain. Most of it feeds animals or becomes ethanol fuel, starch and sweeteners; only part is eaten directly. This is the US export price at the Gulf of Mexico ports.
The units
US dollars per tonne (1,000 kg).
What moves the price
The US harvest (the US grows about a third of the world's maize), Brazil and Argentina, weather, demand for animal feed in China, oil prices (through biofuel demand), and the dollar.
Why it matters for everyday prices
Maize is the main feed for chickens, pigs and cattle, so it reaches meat, egg and milk prices, as well as many processed foods.
