What it is
Arabica is the main coffee bean type, used for most café and filter coffee (the other type, Robusta, goes mostly into instant coffee and blends). This is the price of green, unroasted beans, as averaged by the International Coffee Organization, an intergovernmental body.
The units
US dollars per kilo of green (unroasted) beans. Roasting removes water, so a kilo of green beans makes a little over 800 grams of roasted coffee.
What moves the price
Harvests in Brazil, Colombia, Vietnam and Central America, frost and drought, plant diseases, shipping costs, stock levels, and the Brazilian real against the dollar.
Why it matters for everyday prices
Raw beans are only a small part of a café coffee's price, which is mostly rent, wages and milk. Supermarket coffee reacts more, usually with a delay of several months.
