This is a weekly survey of filling stations, published a day or two after each Monday's survey. It shows what drivers paid on average that week, not a live price.

What it is

The average price of regular petrol (Americans say gasoline) at US filling stations, from a survey of stations across the country every Monday. It includes taxes, which in the US are much lower than in Europe, so the same fuel costs a lot less there.

The units

US dollars per US gallon. A US gallon is 3.785 litres, so a price of $3.80 a gallon is about $1.00 a litre.

What moves the price

Mostly the price of crude oil, which is typically about half of the pump price. The rest is refining costs and profits (higher in summer driving season and when refineries break down), distribution, and taxes.

Why it matters for everyday prices

Fuel is one of the prices people notice most, and it feeds straight into the inflation rate. It shows how quickly a change in the oil price reaches ordinary people: usually within a few weeks.
