How it works

Each month, the amount you hold grows by a twelfth of the yearly rate (compounded), then your monthly amount is added. Nothing is taken out for costs or taxes here: to see what yearly fees do, try the fees calculator.

The rate is an example you choose, held steady every year. Real investments don't behave like that: some years are up, some are down, and the order matters. Read compound interest explained for the full picture.

What is compound interest?

Growth on top of earlier growth. When the returns your money earns stay invested, they start earning returns of their own, so the amount grows faster each year.

Is a 4% yearly return realistic?

This calculator does not say what any investment will return. It shows how compounding works at a steady rate you choose. Real returns change every year, can be negative, and are never guaranteed.
